Henry R. Bishop, M.D.

Specializing in: Obstetrics and Gynecology

Locations: Overland Park Regional and Saint Luke’s South

During the 25 years he has practiced obstetrics and gynecology at Kansas City Women’s Clinic (KCWC), Henry R. Bishop, M.D., has played an important part in  revolutionizing surgery for women. “When I first began seeing patients, women avoided having surgery for some very serious health problems because they knew it would mean putting their lives on hold for six to eight weeks while they recovered, but that no longer is the case,” Dr. Bishop says. “Thanks to the minimally invasive surgical techniques now available, most of our patients are able to return home within 24 hours, and get back to their normal routines in a matter of days, rather than weeks.”

With more than 29 years of experience in the field, Dr. Bishop has advanced training in minimally invasive surgical techniques. He is the founder and director of the Kansas City Minimally Invasive Therapy Institute for Women, an organization dedicated to educating women and physicians about the newest surgical treatments available.  Through the institute, Dr. Bishop has taught gynecologists from across the United States and beyond the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques. Dr. Bishop and his colleagues have even traveled to China, where they spent 10 days sharing their expertise with that country’s doctors.

Dr. Bishop is interested in global women’s health issues, and currently is developing a device that would allow physicians to perform minimally invasive surgery without using electricity. “This could represent a significant advance for women in third-world countries, who could benefit from the many minimally invasive surgeries that have become routine in the United States,” Dr. Bishop says.

Dr. Bishop also has made giving back to the community and underserved women a priority.  He has been involved with organizations such as SafeHome, Planned Parenthood and the Medical Missions Foundation.

Dr. Bishop has five children, ranging in age from 11 to 30. In his off hours, he enjoys spending time in the mountains of New Mexico with his family and friends, camping, hiking and fishing.
